Rose Gardner patrolled the hallways of the Wiley Performing Arts Center at Florida Panhandle University. It was just after midnight, into hour #3 of an eight hour overnight shift as a security guard at the building. Standing at 5’6, Rose was not the most imposing figure. But her job as a security job didn’t demand that she be all that intimidating. Her job was to notice if something was amiss and to call for help, not to fend off a burglar or trespasser if they got aggressive. Still, if she got into a scrape, she was much better able to handle her own than it might seem. She had taken karate most of her life, and was at this point a brown belt. She yawned. She wasn’t quite used to these late nights, even as she got as much sleep during the day as she could. Her body clock was still telling her it was time to go to bed, even if she got about seven hours earlier in the day. She reminded herself that this wouldn’t be forever.
